In the A.D. 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, an estimated 2000 people died. The eruption wiped out the nearby cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae. Below is what the eruption of A.D. 79 might have looked like.

An estimate by rogueclassicism.com says that if the volcano were to have a major eruption today, it would kill 8000 people, seriously injure 13000 people, and an economic loss of more than $24 billion.
